Pembroke County Cricket Club got its 2017 representative matches under way in a positive manner as their relatively young and inexperienced team took on, and beat comfortably, a Wales XL Club team which included NINE of our county’s more senior players.
Pembrokeshire skipper Matthew Davies invited the Wales XL Club to bat first and marshalled his bowlers well after a promising start where Peter Lynn, Paul Mansbridge, Ben Field and Gareth Davies all came and went quickly as Iestyn Scourfield grabbed two wickets and there was one for left-armer Henry Durrant as Gareth ‘Cadfael’ Davies was clearly ring rusty and was run out.
Paul Davies (23) and Nigel Delany (21) established a useful partnership before both departed to the clever variations of pace from Ross Hardy – but Simon Holliday (run out for 27) and Paul Webb (20 not out) made sure that the visitors at least reached three figures, assisted by Andrew Miller (12( before he became one of Nick Koomen’s two scalps.
Huw Scriven became the third ‘old timer’ to be run out as the county team fielded well – and at tea the Wales XL Club had to settle for a disappointing 118 all out in 39.3 overs.
They shared an opening stand of 91 before Howells was dismissed for 40 and Sutton was unlucky to depart just one run short of what would have been a deserved half century.
As so often happens after a big stand, Luke Hayman (Burton) departed for a duck as he gave a return catch to Andrew Miller, who was the pick of the visitors’ bowling with 2 for 34 – and it was left to Phil Hay (Pembroke) and Kilgetty’s Kyle Marsh (22 not out) to see the Pembroke County Cricket Club home in only 29.3 of their allocated 40 overs.
This Sunday sees the County Club’s team travelling to Llandysul to take on the South Wales Cricket League, hoping to build on this excellent performance.
