Fishguard & Goodwick start new life at Tregroes

Fishguard & Goodwick (90 all out) lost to Herbrandston 2nds (184 for 8) by 94 runs

Scorer: Clarrissa Lewis (Herbrandston)

Fishguard and Goodwick finally got back to life with their first-ever league match against Herbrandston Seconds at their new home at Tregroes, which they will now share with Fishguard Sports AFC.

After a great deal of work by a dedicated group of workers led by chairman Matthew ‘Minty’ Lamb and with advice from William Newell, the ground advisor at Pembroke County Cricket Club, the game took place with picturesque views of Goodwick Bay in the back ground – and both sides enjoyed a good afternoon’s cricket before Herbie’s greater experience, allied to some talented teenage cricketers, saw them home.

F & G fielded first and gave a chance to bowl to eight of their players, with Scott Delaney (2 for 15) and Ali Davies (3 for 26) taking the bulk of the bowling honours as there was also a wicket apiece for Dan Griffiths, Tom Portch and Lewis Banks.

Herbie played with seven teenagers and it was father and son duo Dai and Charlie Malloy who opened their batting – but with Dai departing for only four runs before Charlie showed him how to do it with six fours and three sixes in his excellent 51 runs.

He was supported by Ashley Britton (38, including three fours and four sixes), Rob Kingston (17) and skipper Johnny ‘Bap’ Lewis, who again showed his dislike for running between the wickets with three sixes, four fours and three singles in his undefeated 37!

Malloy junior also grabbed 2 for 14 when Herbie bowled and Rob Kingston supported with 1 for 15 as his sons Atticus Kingston (3 for 15) and Ferdie Stevenson (1 for 22) also bowled really well.

Callum Britton showed dad Ashley how to bowl straight with a late 1 for 8 analysis and Chris Murray grabbed 2 for 6 to help set up a Herbie win despite runs for F & G by Delaney (13), James Banks (11) and James Wade (14 not out).

But to quote the old cliché it was cricket that was the winner and every credit to the host club for getting back up and running again – and to Herbie for playing their part in such an excellent debut for the Tregroes pitch.

Rest of Division Five Round-Up:

Neyland 3rds showed they will be strong in this section as they bowled out Stackpole 2nds for 60 and eased through to 63 for 2.

Old timers John Davies (15) and Steve Alford (11) top scored for Stackpole as Rhys Beavis (3 for 11), Sam Laugharne (2 for 10) and Kasey Arran (2 for 11) bowled well for Neyland before Nathan Sutton (23 not out) and Phil Keen (17) saw them home despite tidy bowling by Ben Davies (1 for 15) and Jess Gibby (1 for 11).

Cresselly 3rds also played well to restrict Llechryd 2nds to 107 for 7 and then reach their target whilst losing only one wicket. Neale Lewis top scored for Cresselly with 54 not out as Jaap Harries (1 for 21) was the sole successful Llechryd bowler after old war-horse Ben Graham (54) has looked good for them with the bat but no-one else managed to stay long.

Tom Kaijaks struck a splendid half century for Pembroke 2ndsPembroke 2nds reached a healthy 157 for 8 thanks to some big hitting by Tom Kaijaks (51) and Charlie Perkins before they shot out Haverfordwest 4ths for 71 via good bowling by George Davies (2 for 8), Will Davidson-Randell (2 for 6) and Hassan Aziz (3 for 2) – and John Ryan (jnr) top scored with 16 not out.

Hundleton (114 for 5) beat Pembroke Dock 2nds (113 for 6) by 5 wickets as the visitors’ top scorers were teenager Rhys Daley (28), Luke Murray (36) and A Phillips (38) and with Stuart McNiffe the pick of the Hundleton bowlers with 3 for 21.

McNiffe (16), David Lockyear (31), Ben Adams (20) and Yori Humphreys (21 not out) then batted well so although O Hughes claimed 3 for 24 as the best Dock bowler it was the village side that started their campaign with a win.
