National Village Cup

Neyland (160 for 9) beat Bronwydd (62 all out) by 98 runs

Venue: The Athletic Ground, Neyland
Umpires: Trefor Evans and Dave Bonner
Scorers: John Laugharne (Neyland) and Gavin Rowland (digital), John Horner (Bronwydd)

Ross HardyA superb spell of bowling by Ross Hardy helped Neyland gain an easy win over Bronwydd, from Division One of the South Wales League, assisted by a typically miserly spell from Andrew Miller, plus excellent batting in the conditions by Nick Koomen and Brad McDermott-Jenkins.

Twins Sean and Patrick Hannon also gave the Neyland tally a late boost with an unbroken stand of 29 and the whole Neyland team fielded and caught well in support of their bowling attack.

Bronwydd start well but Koomen and McDermott-Jenkins lead Neyland fight-back

Bronwydd, a village four miles north of Carmarthen, won the toss and elected to field first – and gained early successes as Colin Tucker shifted Patrick Bellerby and Ashley Sutton cheaply before Koomen and McDermott-Jenkins produced a vital partnership of 54 runs.

But  Koomen was unlucky to be bowled by South African pace manNick Koomen Josh Rencken for 38 (four fours) when the ball hit his body and as he tried to stop it going towards the wicket he only succeeded in propelling it on to the stumps for an unusual dismissal.

Nick KoomenRencken also shifted McDermott-Jenkins after he had looked in good nick reaching 40 (six fours) before he gave a catch to Carwyn Jones with the score on 99.

Hannon twins help Neyland to a sizeable score

Matthew Bagshaw and James Dixon then entered the bowling fray for Bronwydd as they returned respective figures of 2 for 48 and 3 for 18 as Neyland limped to 131 for 9 – but then the Hannon twins ran well between the wickets for 15 not out apiece, with Patrick hitting a four and skipper Sean smiting a six in the final over which was roundly cheered by his colleagues because it was something of a collector’s item!

Be that as it may, those late runs took the home side to 160 for 9, a sizeable score in the conditions as it was also boosted by 14 wides in the 18 extras.

Patrick and Sean HannonBronwydd start well but fade . . .

Bronwydd started their reply well as Rencken and Jacob Jenkinson put on 24 runs before Nathan Banner struck a vital blow by having Rencken caught by Bellerby for 19 (two boundaries).

Jenkinson took 38 balls to reach 15 but then was so bamboozled by Andrew Miller’s slow stuff that he charged down the wicket, missed the ball and gave Sean Hannon the simplest of stumpings.

. . . And lose eight wickets for 14 runs!

Patrick Hannon also picked up a wicket when Banner caught Phil Howell and it was the beginning of the end for Bronwydd as they lurched from 49 for 2 to be shot out for the addition of only another 14 runs as Miller and especially Hardy ran amok.

Andrew MillerMiller ended with 3 for 8 from his eight overs, which included two maidens and Hardy was even more of a bowling skinflint as he had five maidens in his seven overs, whilst conceding only two scoring shots and grabbing four wickets.

McDermott-Jenkins applied the coup de grace as he was called upon to bowl at 62 for 9 and from his only delivery he bowled Colin Tucker and Neyland were through to the next stage – and eager to know who they will take on at that stage!
