Pembroke County friendly match:
Pembroke County 139 for 3 beat Welsh Over 40s Club (136 for 7) by 7 wickets
Venue: Haverfordwest Cricket Club
Umpires: Steve Blowes & Alan Hansen
Scorer: Natalie Thomas
The selectors of the Pembroke County Cricket Club gave a chance to their talented young players as they took on the veterans of the Welsh Over 40s Club and won with ease after restricting the opposition, who included five players with local connections, and then reached their target in only 17.5 of their allocated 40 overs.
The reason for such a speedy conclusion came from the fact that they encountered something of a Whitland Tornado as No 4 Geraint Jones came to the crease after the county had established a solid platform at 64 for 2 and unleased such powerful hitting that his 59 not out came in only 23 deliveries as he lashed four fours and five huge maximums!
Veteran’s struggle until Capon shows his class
Bowling well for Pembroke County were Loui Davies (Narberth) with 2 for 18, Ryan Morton (Lawrenny) 2 for 17, Gethin Scourfield Whitland 2-10 and John Mansbridge (Saundersfoot) 1-26 as the wicket-takers, whilst Ashley James (Haverfordwest), Josh Lewis (Cresselly) and skipper Brad McDermott-Jenkins (Neyland), who handled his young charges really well, also kept things as tight as possible.
In the field, McDermott-Jenkins took two sharp slip catches to get rid of Holliday and Rob Saunders, whilst Scourfield, Morton and Sutton (Neyland) also held on for good catches as they also fielded well.
County make a solid start and Jones takes total control
Sutton (39 in 31 balls, including eight fours) and Harry Nicholas (St Ishmaels) (22) put on 53 for the first wicket before the former was stumped by Craig Nutty (now with Hook) and Harry contributed 22 alongside his twin brother Jack (7) before he fell victim to a splendid return single-handed catch, well above his head, by another Pembrokian veteran in Paul Webb.
But then Geraint Jones exerted his considerable influence after scoring a duck for Whitland the previous day, taking 24 off one over by Lee Parry, who had claimed two wickets at that time – and it was soon all over bar the shouting as John Mansbridge (7 not out) watched from the other end!
