Neyland Cricket Club play at South Wingfield of the Derbyshire League

National Village Cup Quarter-Finals:

Neyland face another mammoth round-trip on Sunday, after entertaining Haverfordwest on Saturday, as they leave the clubhouse at 6pm and make the 502-mile round trip to take on South Wingfield, who play in Division Two of the Derbyshire League and it is also the first time they have reached this round.

Their latest opposition play their cricket at their ‘Fourlane’ ground near Alfreton in Derbyshire and at the moment they are vying for promotion from division two of the Derbyshire County Cricket League, having won 11 of their 15 matches so far.

South Wingfield is a strong all-round side

In their latest tussle against Trentside, they won easily as opener Richard Fenn scored a century and skipper Liam Mitchell also batted well – and these two also top their batting charts with respective totals of 586 and 391 runs.

On the bowling front they have Dan Connolly with 29 wickets and Harry Brown with 25, whilst Richard Briggs has the best bowling figures with 6 for 40, closely followed by 5 for 7 apiece by Antonio Palladino and Lewis Radford.

Neyland will use their undoubted strengths

But Neyland will go into this quarter-final in the same battling mode as they have done in so many away games, using their long batting and varied bowling line-ups, excellent fielding and unique team spirit to give them a good chance of reaching the last four.

Once again they have received lots of support from their community and on this occasion their travel and fuel costs have been sponsored by sponsorship for travel and fuel costs has come from Darren Briggs of  the Ascona Group, who have garages at Neyland and The Green in Pembroke.

Grateful thanks

The club is also very grateful to Scott Gregory, of The Green Shed in Haverfordwest, who also caters at the Neyland Hub, and all the other sponsors who have contributed on their fantastic journey so far.

Outstanding skipper Sean Hannon has been interviewed by the sponsors Voneus Broadband and tonight they are filming and taking photos at training as the featured club for this weekend.

Like all cricket lovers in Pembrokeshire we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk, wish the Neyland team, scorer John Laugharne, team manager Peter Davies and organiser Martin Jones another enjoyable and successful trek!
