Lewis starts amazing Carew comeback
Carew (224 for 6) beat Whitland (220 for 6) by 4 wickets
Umpires: Dave Bonner & Glyn Cole
Scorers: Julie Davies & Jenny Davies-Scourfield
Carew made one of the comebacks of the season as they successfully chased down Saundersfoot’s challenging 218 for 7 to ease home by four wickets – after a dreadful start to their reply as The Rooks stood at FOUR WICKETS FOR FOUR RUNS AFTER FOUR OVERS!
Wreaking such damage was veteran bowler Wayne Howells as he removed Nick Davies, Nick Scourfield, Ian Sefton and Brian Hall but this reversal brought out the best in the Hicks brothers, Lewis and Luke, alongside a classy return for Simon Wood which showed he can still perform at the top levels of Pembrokeshire Cricket.
Lewis blasted nine fours and four big sixes on his way to a superb 103 not out, sharing a partnership of 159 with Simon Wood before ‘Woodie’ departed for 65 (five fours and a six).
This brought Luke Hicks to the crease and he had three boundaries and a maximum in his 41 not out as Carew transformed their total to win in only 37.2 overs despite Howells’ amazing figures of nine overs, five maidens, 19 runs and FIVE wickets!
Whitland’s earlier innings of 220 for 6 was built on solid knocks from Hywel Bevan (27), Geraint Jones (49, including four fours and three sixes), Jonathan Thomas (40), Scott Newton (17), Jack Bowen (40 not out) and Gethin Scourfield (22 not out).
Carew’s successful bowlers were Sam Harts (1 for 25), James Hinchliffe (1 for 43), Wood (1 for 36) and Iori Hicks (2 for 53) - but it was the great Rooks’ recovery that was the main talking point afterwards!
Pawlett cousins power Tish to welcome win
Llechryd (179 for 9) lost to St Ishmaels (180 for 6) by 4 wickets
Umpire: Arthur Brady
Scorers: Melissa Fletcher & Wendy Bradshaw
The Pawlett family has served St Ishmaels well for a number of generations and in this match it was cousins Andrew and Jonathan Pawlett who played key roles as Tish gained an important win over fellow basement battlers Llechryd.
As usual the Llechryd total of 179 for 9 owed much to John Curran as he scored 43 that included six boundaries, and he had support from Tom Mansfield (33, also with six fours), Andrew Fletcher (30) and Matthew Reynolds (25 not out).
For Tish, Andrew Palmer had a wicket from his third ball and another in his second over as part of his 2 for 40 figures from nine overs, whilst canny slow bowler Andrew Pawlett spear-headed the attack with an excellent 4 for 24 haul and the other successful bowlers were Lewis Rhead (2 for 34) and Ieuan Hawkins (1 for 6).
Jonathan Pawlett then led the Tish response with 65 not out (nine fours and a six) and cousin Andrew was there with him at the end with a typical blitzkrieg 29 that was made from only 16 deliveries and included six fours.
Sandwiched in between was 36 from opener Peter Bradshaw and 21 from Karl Rhead as John Curran (1 for 35), David Dunfee (3 for 29) and Dafydd Davies (2 for 20) bowled well for the home side – but were unable to turn back the Pawlett tide in the final analysis!
High-flying Narberth win well again
Narberth (238 all out) beat Cresselly (155 all out) by 83 runs
Umpires: Tony Walsh & Richard Merriman
Scorers: Gwyneth Johns & Teagan Cartwright
After winning the toss and electing to bat first Narberth’s sizeable score of 238 all out in their 45 overs had Kyle Quartermaine again in form with a boundary-laden 67 (nine fours and three sixes, sharing in a stand of 53 with talented teenager Will Nicholas, who marked his first-team debut with a stylish 41 (six fours).
Loui Davies (23), Jordan Howell (22), Davy Johns (19) and Rhodri Dyer (17) also chipped in against the bowling of Tom Arthur (3 for 33), Simon Cole (2 for 42), Ryan Lewis (2 for 45) and Tom Murphy (1 for 30).
Cresselly found it hard to get up a real head of steam for their run chase, so much so that No 7 Ryan Lewis topped their batting with 27 runs, assisted by No 10 Tom Murphy (26 not out) after Matthew Morgan (28) and Iwan Izzard (26) were the only early batsmen to really get going at all.
Matthew Johns pouched a 3 for 15 haul from nine miserly overs and Davy Johns grabbed 3 for 19 in his five overs – with Loui Davies (1 for 26), Ben Quartermaine (1 for 50) and skipper Ben Hughes (2 for 35) the other wicket-takers as Narberth deservedly find themselves in fourth place as their reward.
Lawrenny all-round batting strength pays off
Saundersfoot (218 for 7) lost to Lawrenny (220 for 7) by 3 wickets
Umpires: Dave Brandon & Allan Hansen
Scorers: Adge John & Malcolm Thomas
There were runs galore at Saundersfoot where the host club pushed high-flying Lawrenny all the way before Joe Kidney’s boys eased home with three wickets, and five overs, still in hand as they used their overall batting strength to good effect.
Saundersfoot batted first but were quickly in trouble as they lurched to 25 for 3 but John Mansbridge and Nicky Cope provided the perfect rescue package with a magnificent partnership of 152 in which Mansbridge seemed assured of three figures after his 72 the previous week but was run out for a classy 94.
Cope also looked in fine fettle with his 64 and cameos came from Ross Helmich (12), Simon Stanford (10 not out) and Yannik Parker (18) so that The Seasiders managed a healthy 218 for 7 despite the bowling exploits of Harry Thomas (3 for 48), Rob Williams (2 for 31) and Kurtis Marsh (1 for 54).
Marsh again led the Lawrenny reply until he departed for 53, clearly in no hurry to run too much in the heat as he stroked 12 boundaries, with Jamie Phillips (35), Joe Kidney (36), James Buckle (39) and Rob Williams (26 not out) providing supporting roles.
For The Seasiders the main bowlers were Tudor Hurle (3 for 29) and Nick Cope (2 for 49) alongside Sam Franklin (1 for 44) and Neil Powling (1 for 29).
Hardy and Sutton lead Neyland to vital victory
Neyland (231 for 6) beat Haverfordwest (227 all out) by 4 wickets
Umpires: Trefor Evans & Steve Blowes
Scorers: John Laugharne & Jayne Cole
Superb batting by Ashley Sutton and Ross Hardy saw Neyland successfully chase down a big score as Haverfordwest played better than of late but saw this deadly duo put on 140 runs together in a vital partnership.
Haverfordwest skipper Dai Davies, playing with a much-changed team, opted to bat first and although they lost Ben Field early managed to build steadily on a good batting track and lightning-fast outfield so that they moved to 104 for 3 in 25 overs and accelerated on to 227 before losing their last wicket with two balls remaining.
Mikey Jones looked in good nick for The Town as he opened with six boundaries in his 42 and skipper Dai Davies (five fours in his 52) alongside previous captain Danny Potter (63, including eight fours).
They provided the bulk of The Town’s total but Ashley James (24) and keeper Jack Scriven (14) also managed double figures.
Neyland fielded really well and had wickets from Nathan Banner (3 for 43), Henry Durant (2 for 39), Ross Hardy (1 for 24), Andrew Miller (1 for 37) and Brad McDermott-Jenkins (1 for 58), whose father Ian ‘Bish’ Jenkins had a bowling stint on his senior debut for Neyland, but didn’t pick up a wicket.
Nick Koomen (16) and Brad McDermott-Jenkins (19) made minor contributions to the Neyland cause but it was No 3 Sutton, with nine fours and a six in his classy 75, who took away the initiative from The Town and Hardy’s raw power set the seal on the result as he struck 11 fours and four big sixes en route to 97 and what seemed another deserved century until he was well caught on the boundary by Archie Thomas off Johnny White’s bowling.
Thomas also claimed 2 for 36 as reward for his whole-hearted efforts and James Marchant made a welcome first-team appearance for The Town with a 2 for 17 spell.
