Harrison-Allen Bowl Semi-Final:
Burton (142 for 5) lost to Carew (145 for 2) by 8 wickets
Umpires: Steve Blowes & Glyn Cole
Scorers: Janice Webb & Julie Davies
Venue: The Athletic Ground, Neyland
Yet they looked likely to achieve a bigger score as Toby Hayman and Jack Davies set them on the road, with former batsman unleashed a beautiful straight six into the car park alongside two fours in his quick 15 but then edged a good delivery from Rhys Davies into Nick Davies’ gloves with the score on 20.
John Venables chipped in with a useful 15 but then played a ball on from Shaun Whitfield so that Jack Davies was joined by younger brother James – and they took the score to 89 as Carew spinner Ceri Brace had four catches uncharacteristically dropped by his outfielders.
Carew keep the pressure on
But Carew kept the pressure on by bowling tight lines supported by good ground fielding and Burton could only muster 26 runs in the vital period from the 11th to the 15th over.
James Davies (12) was bowled by Sion Jenkins and his brother Jack was run out in a mix up with Martin James when he’s scored 59 excellent runs, including five classy fours and a lucky five from a quickly-taken single followed by four careless overthrows!
James (11) was then well caught at long-on by James Hinchliffe and George Williams livened things up late on with two fours and a massive six in his unbeaten 20.
It left Burton on 142 for 5 from their 22 overs, a decent score but one which was slightly below par on an excellent wicket and fast outfield at The Athletic Ground.
Sefton and the Hicks brothers take Carew through to the final
And that is just the way things turned out for Carew, despite the loss of skipper Whitfield for 13, bowled by Jack Davies, as Lewis Hicks was joined by Ian Sefton and their combination of boundaries, taken alongside plenty of sensible running between the wickets, ensured they were always ahead of the required run rate.
Hicks eventually departed for an excellent 53 (including three fours and two sixes) when he was well caught by skipper Hayman off Morgan Scale’s canny slow stuff,- but by then it was all over by the shouting as Sefton reached 47 not out (three fours and a six).
He had been joined by Luke Hicks, who struck three boundaries in his 18 not out, and The Rooks were able to celebrate a trip to Cresselly for the final with eight wickets and 21 balls still in hand.
