Umpires: Trefor Evans & Chris Stapleton
Scorers: Julie Davies & Nicola Murray
Venue: Treleet Ground, Pembroke
Man of the Match: Morgan Grieve (Carew)
Adjudicator: Steve Blowes (Hon Sec, Pembroke CCC)
A large crowd turned out to support the second teams of Carew and Pembroke Dock in the Alec Colley Cup Final at a sun-baked Treleet Ground in Pembroke which looked a picture after all the hard work undertaken by groundsman Jonathan Davies, Kevin Jenkins and their industrious crew.
FIRST INNINGS:
Carew get off to a flying start
Carew skipper Gareth Lewis won the toss and elected to bat, counting on his experienced run getters at the top of the innings to build a huge score – and openers Scott Richard and Nick Scourfield certainly repaid that faith as they sped past three figures after 12 overs before they lost their first wicket.
Nick Scourfield was the first to go as he was caught by Adam Phillips off the bowling of Anton John with four boundaries in his 36, made off 27 deliveries with the total already on 105.
His departure brought Morgan Grieve to the crease and he joined Richards in plundering runs off anything loose, alongside sending the bad ball; to or over the boundary rope. Richards had reached 78 in 58 balls, with 13 fours, when he finally holed out to George Smith off Owen Hughes with Carew on top at 145 for 12 with 12.5 overs left.
But there was to be no respite as Grieve belted six fours and three big sixes in his 49 before he went for one big hit too many and was caught by Camran Robinson off Rob Hearne and with skipper Lewis and Dai Rees adding a few late on it meant that 42 runs had come in those final 17 balls, leaving The Dock with a mountain to climb.

The Dock find runs hard to come by
Pembroke Dock needed a very good start through top batsmen Anton John and Adam Phillips and they added 50 but by then they were at the half-way stage of the innings as Carew kept things tight through wily old foxes Kerry Waters and then Barry Evans and were supported by excellent fielding.
John eventually departed for 20 when he touched a Waters’ delivery into Morgan Grieve’s waiting gloves – and the keeper was heavily involved as he stumped Phillips for 24 (four boundaries) and then caught George Smith (21) and skipper Peter Kingdom (2) off Evans’ canny slow stuff to help him claim fine figures of 3 for 25.
Rob Hearn contributed 15 and Bowyn Clark (10 not out) as The Dock Finished on 111 for 6, so that they were 76 runs adrift at the tea interval.

SECOND INNINGS:
Carew continue to turn the screw
Carew started their second innings with more quick runs as 35 came in four overs but The Dock stuck to their guns and Scourfield (12) and Richards (20) departed so that at 43 for 2 The Rooks had lost their way a little - but Morgan Grieve was joined by skipper Lewis as they built an unbroken stand of 140 as they punished anything loose and ran well between the wickets.
Lewis had nine boundaries in a typically classy innings of 68 from 44 deliveries, moving to 50 in only 38 balls – and Grieve produced a string of big hits, especially late on, which saw him score an unbeaten 65, including seven fours and three big sixes, one right out of the ground.
Indeed, one of his guided missiles homed in on the back window of a very worried old reporter but the possible damage was prevented by some terrific fielding from Cresselly Ladies’ all-rounder Eleri Williams as she parried the ball out of harm’s way as she stood watching nearby!
It left Carew on another massive score of 183 for 2, leaving The Dock with Everest to climb and a target of 260 for victory.

The Dock struggle but never stop fighting
The Pembroke Dock innings got off to the worst possible start as Anton John, their ace run-maker in previous rounds, was bowled first ball by Max Brindley but Adam Phillips and George Smith added 34 runs before the latter was adjudged lbw to Brindley for 23, including five boundaries.
Peter Kingdom showed why he leads the team with a captain’s innings of 36 (four fours) as he and Phillips shared a stand of 71 but he was well caught at long-on by Jacob Knox.
Brindley, bowling with real pace from the road end, had Phillips (43, including three boundaries) caught by stand-in keeper Haydn Shapcott, who did a good job in the final innings, and then bowled Hearn next ball to finish with a deserved haul of 4 for 33.
Bowyn Clark showed his maturity by surviving the hat-trick ball and was 11 not out at the end, with The Dock on 121 for 5 and Carew celebrating victory by 138 runs.

And finally . . .
Dave Brandon, the vice-chairman of the Pembroke County Cricket Club, conducted the presentation ceremony and he rightly thanked Pembroke for their usual high-quality preparation for the game, both umpires, scorers and the teams and supporters for making it a good day for local cricket.
He also added extra congratulations to Pembroke Dock, who had battled their way through to the final against the odds and played a big part in the match itself with their skills and battling spirit.
He introduced Kevin Jenkins, the president of Pembroke Cricket Club, who presented the mementoes to all involved in the game and the Alec Colley trophy to Gareth Lewis, the captain of Carew 2nds.
The man of the match adjudicator was Steve Blowes, the Hon Secretary of the county club and his decision of Morgan Grieve for his innings of 49 and 65 not out, plus four catches and a stumping, was a popular one!
