Dock A beat Llanrhian in only game of the evening

George Smith - Pem Dock AJake Davies - Pem Dock AWith Pembroke Dock B team unable to field a team there was only one of the three games played and Pembroke Dock A were the only winners as they batted first against Llanrhian and scoured too many for an opposing team that seems to have lost a bit of their sparkle over recent games.

Yet The Dock A didn’t make a decent start as they lost skipper Scott Griffiths for a duck, bowled by Daf Williams – and Tom Grimwood departed for 10 when he was run out.
There were useful scores from Jake Davies (17, caught by Llion Williams) off Tom Clarke, who also bowled Rhys Daley for 18.

But then The major influences on their total was the batting of tail enders George Smith (38 not out) and veteran Glyn Griffiths, who showed son Scott how to do things with 17 not out, alongside 10 extras.

So after being 46 for 4 at the half way stage The Dock A added 64 runs in the latter five overs and in all there were 22 threes, five fours and a six as Clarke finished with 2 for 19 and pace man Karl Davies had seven ‘dot balls’ as he only gave 11 runs from his two overs.

Daf Williams (24) and skipper Jon Strawbridge gave Llanrhian their usual good start with respective scores of 24 (bowled by Jake Davies) and 26 not out. Iwan James (17) and Clarke (18) also contributed as Jake Davies claimed his second scalp by bowling James and Grimwood shifted Clarke with the assistance of Llion Williams.

But Karl Davies gave a return catch to Scott Griffiths without scoring and Llion Williams was 3 not out as Jake Davies’s two overs included a maiden and saw him grab 2 for 3, with NINE dot balls and there was no time for Strawbridge to exert a further influence in the final overs!

Match One – Vets A easily win club derby

Pembs Vets (154 for 4) beat Pembs Vets B (87 for 3)

Pembrokeshire Vets A showed what a strong batting line-up they have as they smashed a massive total against their stunned B team, who could only muster 87 for 3 in response as they were unable to face the challenge of scoring at over 15 runs an over.

The St Ishmaels’ duo of Kevin Bowen and Stuart Carpenter put on 50+ for the first wicket before Bowen (23) was stumped by Martin Thomas off the bowling of Julian Forster – and Andrew Williams (26 not out) maintained the momentum.

David Haynes (23), Rob Nicholas (19) and Ian Milsom (13) also made useful contributions before being run out – but Carpenter returned from early retirement to end up undefeated on 37 so that with 13 from ‘Mr Extras’ the A team had sped to 154 for 4 which included 22 threes, 5 fours and a six alongside 22 ‘dot balls’.

When The Vets B gave chase they had a solid opening partnership between Paul Webb (retired on 27) and Danny Griffiths (caught Kevin Bowen and bowled Ian Milsom for 17). But Martin Thomas 6) was bowled by Rob Nicholas (1 for 22); Kevin Bowen (1 for 13)  bowled Mike Williams (6) as Hywel Gibbs (19 not out) and Julian Forster (6 not out) were there at the end as they settled on 87 for 3 as their tally contained only four boundaries and 18 threes.

Match Two – Hook win at a canter

Pembs Vets A (104 for 3) lost to Hook (105 for 1)

The Vets A found it harder to score runs against a dynamic young bowling attack from Hook, who limited the old timers to 104 for 3 in their allotted ten overs before reaching their target for the loss of only one wicket in 8.3 overs.

Kevin Bowen was again the lynch-pin of the Vets’ batting with 25 (retired) and had excellent support from Andrew Williams (32 not out) and Neil Williams (22 not out) but then lost their momentum as David Haynes (8) was caught by Callum James off Harry Makepeace, and Rob Nicholas and Mark Hicks were both run out for 3 runs as 11 extras helped them to 104 for 3.

Hook lost Liam Miller (6),  bowled by Rob Nicholas, but Makepeace, Lewis Miller and Seth Willington all retired on 26 apiece – and Bradley Flood (3) and James (4) had the simple task of steering Hook home with nine balls in hand.

Match Three – Vets B suffer startling collapse

Pembs Vets B (23 all out) lost to Hook (24 not out)

The match between Pembs Vets B and Hook ended in almost record time as the senior citizens of cricket could only muster 23 as they were dramatically dislodge in only five overs and Hook used up only 2.2 overs in reaching their target without losing a wicket.

All the Hook bowlers maintained accuracy and there was a wicket for Bradley Flood as Liam Miller caught Hywel Gibbs (3) but Paul Webb (3), Danny Griffiths (4), Stephen Thornton (2), Matthew Vaughan (2) and Hywel Gibbs (5) came and went quickly – with Mr Extras as joint top scorer on 5!

In sharp contrast, Liam Miller (12 not out) and Harry Makepeace (12 not out) were calmness personified in reaching their lowly total needed as The Vets’ tally comprised 2 threes, 10 singles and 7 extras!
