Over 60s International Football:
Mick, Bob and Gerald fly the Pembrokeshire flag in
win over 'The Old Enemy'!
Pembrokeshire Football was well represented at Over 60 level when Wales retained the 'Frank Terrell Cup' in a very close encounter at Hungerford Town FC with a 1 - 0 win over their counterparts from England.
Mick Algieri, Bob Nelson and Gerald Hicks have all been long-term members of the County's Over 45 team and after Algieri and Nelson had appeared previously in this age group – they were joined by Carew's midfield battler Hicks, who had played for his country many years ago when he was a talented footballer at Pembroke Borough.
Hicks vies for man of the match
All members of the squad can be proud of this win, with captain John Convery taking the Wales 'Man of the Match' award. He was closely followed by Gerald Hicks, who played a dominant role in the centre of midfield, and Dicky Batt, with Bob Nelson playing at right back and Mick Algieri playing up front, where his pace was always going to be an asset.
Paul 'Sasha' Young scored the only goal after 31 minutes from a Mick Algieri cross and Wales battled well to stop England getting the equaliser, as well as creating chances of their own in a flowing tussle.
Bob's delighted
England played some creative football and will be disappointed that they didn't get the draw that they perhaps deserved, but Bob Nelson said that Wales were delighted by the away victory and thanked Dave Golding and Ken Pollock for all their work in staging another great match in this series between the two countries.
“Our team spirit played a big part,†he said, “and we already looking forward to our next match, which is scheduled to take place at Conference League side Forest Green in May.â€
Mick's thrilled to play for Wales
His view was reflected by Algieri, who is of Italian origin but clearly delighted to play for Wales.
“I was thrilled when I made my debut,†he admitted, “but this was even more brilliant, with the three of us travelling up together, and I hope there will be chances for other Pembrokeshire players in the near future.â€
PembrokeshireSport.co.uk was also extremely glad to hear the news about our veteran 'Three Musketeers' and we look forward to hearing more about these matches when they next play.
