Derek Roberts, the founder of the ‘Blast Soccer Coaching for Kids’ based in Haverfordwest, is delighted that children and parents have hailed his first sessions a big success.
Around 20 children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions run weekly by Roberts, with the help of coaches Matthew Price and Stephen McNabney, at the Bridge Meadow over a six-week period.
The average age of the kids attending is just seven; he has been using the ‘Coerver Coaching’ technique that can be used on all abilities up to the age of 16.
Roberts already holds an A Licence and has qualified in Coerver Coaching. It’s a global coaching programme inspired by the teachings of Wiel Coerver and created in 1984 by Alfred Gelustian and Chelsea great, Charlie Cooke.
“Getting players started with the correct coaching so young is vital,” said Roberts. “Once they pick up the basic skills and they practice it all becomes second nature to them when they start playing the game.”
Coerver coaching is a football skills teaching method suited for all ages, but especially for players aged 5-16 years old of all abilities and their parents, coaches and teachers.
This method focuses on individual skills development and small group play. The ultimate goal of the Coerver Coaching methods is to develop skilled, confident and creative players. Make the game more fun to practice and play. Teach good sportsmanship and respect for all. Value winning but not more than character and performance. Provide a safe and educational experience that meets best practice criteria.

Roberts only charges a small fee and all the proceeds will be donated to his two favoured charities the Wales Air Ambulance and Liver Foundation that are both close to his heart.
