There was action aplenty at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium as Haverfordwest County Youth and their counterparts from Port Talbot showed why they are both in the best three teams in the McWhirter League with an entertaining tussle.
But for the first time that the Young Bluebirds have competed at this level there were no goals as respective keepers Dan Evans and Connor McFenton made some superb saves, the woodwork intervened or shots whizzed just wide of the target.
“I was pleased with the way my squad played,” said Steve Batty afterwards, “and with a little luck we might have snatched it but on the balance of play perhaps a draw was the fairest result because they battled hard after losing a player to a red card.”
The Young Bluebirds had slightly the better of the first period as the direct running of Lloyd Hughes, Mohannad Romman and Laurie Haworth caused problems for Port Talbot, assisted by Glen Fiteni, Mark Davies and skipper Joe Brill, whilst Owen Coombs and Gwion Howell paired up well at the heart of the defence.
It looked as if the Young Bluebirds would take the lead as sub Louis Thompson volleyed from 12 yards but McFenton did well to save, as did Dan Evans, with one of the best saves seen at the Bridge Meadow Stadium for a long time, as Kostyc Georgiwzky’s volley seemed destined for the top corner.
Glen Fiteni also had a shot saved and the visitors hit the woodwork through Rowley before the game ended with Port Talbot still in second place and with Haverfordwest County in fourth spot but with games in hand.
