Nine minutes into the clash, Goodwick United were desperately unlucky not to take the lead when left sided midfielder Jonny Horgan struck a sweet right foot volley from the edge of the box that beat Robins’ goalkeeper Andrew Fairbairn but cannoned off the post.

However, cup holders took the lead in the 26th minute, good work down the left led to Rob Morgans crossing to Horgan who made no mistake at the far post.

The Phoenix Lads extended the lead in the 37th minute, a route one ball fell to Rhys Dalling who showed good composure to tuck the ball past the advancing Fairbairn.

Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick United outfit were good value for their two-goal cushion at half time.

Curling effort

Ten minutes after the break the Robins came close to scoring, Chris Thompson striking a beautiful curling shot from the corner of the 18 yard box that forced a finger-tip save from James Gwilt.

Dalling went extremely close to adding a third goal when his wicked shot from distance rapped against the crossbar.

Virtually on full time Rob Morgans slotted home from close range, but his effort was ruled out for offside, but it made no difference to the outcome as Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick United outfit can look forward to trying to retain the trophy that they won last season.
