Footballers past their ‘sell by’ date in Pembrokeshire can now look forward to a renewed participation in a game they love with the advent of ‘Walking Football’ at Haverfordwest County’s Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium and at Maes y Mor, the home of Solva AFC.
Sporting chance for old-timers
“We want to encourage sporting participation for a very special age group,” Joanna told us, “who can now continue to enjoy football if they are aged 50 or over – and we eventually plan different categories for 50-59 year olds, 60-69 year olds and even for 70+ because there has been a real uptake in this area elsewhere because players are not allowed to do anything but walk and sliding tackles are outlawed.
“It becomes very much a skills-based game and initial evidence suggests that it can be a real boost to good health – and we will also be looking for referees from anyone who would like to be involved but is unsure about actual participation.”
So all you have to do to find out more about this new approach to football is to give Jo a ring on 07814 540434 – she will be delighted to hear from you and it could give you a new spring in your step as you enjoy taking part in Walking Football!
