West Wales Intermediate Cup – Round 3
Hakin United 1 – Goodwick United 5
Goodwick United put on an impressive five-star display to convincingly beat arch rivals Hakin United in their own backyard to progress in this prestigious competition.
The Vikings were last season’s beaten finalists - losing against Penlan at the Swansea.com Stadium back in early May.
Hakin player manager Justin ‘Skinny’ Harding would have felt his side had a decent chance of beating the current Division One and Senior Cup holders, but Chris O’Sullivan’s ‘Phoenix Boys’ took their chances and came away with a massive morale boosting win at the Obs.
Goodwick’s goal scorers were Rhys Jones and Rhys Dalling who bagged two goals each alongside a rare James Bryan strike, it was 1-1 at halt time as a Callum Stannett header kept the Vikings in touch. However, the visitors scored four unanswered second half goals, and they also had two disallowed as they finished comfortable victors.
The visitors broke the deadlock when dead ball specialist Rhys Jones scored with a superb 20 yard free kick which flew in the top corner.
However, five minutes later the Vikings equalised as Jack Griffiths clever cross with the outside of his boot found the unmarked 20-year-old Stannett who headed home from inside the box.
After the break the visitors were awarded a penalty when a clumsy challenge by Mark Jones on Will Haworth allowed Jones to score comfortably from 12 yards to put his team 2-1 ahead.
Centre back James Bryan added the third with a neatly struck six yard finish, matters got worse for the Vikings as substitute Hayden Dimond was issued a straight red card following an altercation with Mattie Delaney.
The Phoenix Lads took advantage with the extra man as Rhys Dalling benefited from a neat Nathan Greene ball, the striker cut in from the wing before he unleashed an unstoppable low drive in the bottom corner.
In injury time Dalling scored another, a carbon copy of his earlier goal, this time Ben Adams released the danger man who cut in and found the far corner to complete the rout.
