Boys galore take to the hockey pitch

Pupils taking part in the hockey festival.Over 90 boys took to the pitch last week for the third under-13s hockey festival with the Sir Thomas Picton A team beating Greenhill B in the final by 1-0.

New initiative

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - and Hockey Wales, the 5x60 boy's hockey festival took place at Fishguard as ten teams.

The festival is part of a Sport Pembrokeshire initiative to introduce boys to the sport and thanks to the 5x60 programme, six Pembrokeshire secondary schools now provide boys' hockey sessions at lunch time or after school.

Jo Williams, Active Young People's Manager for Sport Pembrokeshire, presented the winning team with medals sponsored by Valero.

Angela is delighted

Angela Miles, the Hockey Agent for Pembrokeshire, said she was delighted at the number of boys who had taken part.
“We had 40 more players than last year, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport in the County,” she said. “Some of the young players have now gone on to join their local clubs.”

The 5x60 project is organised by Sport Pembrokeshire with the aim of encouraging secondary school pupils top take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.
