Stephanie's contribution is pure gold!
Stephanie Harris loves taking part in a wide range of sporting activities and it is to her great credit that she is eager to help others find a sport or leisure activity which will allow them to find as much satisfaction and enjoyment as she does.
For Stephanie is actively involved in the Young Ambassadors' scheme at St David's School and is one of only four Gold Ambassadors in the whole county as reward for her commitment to the cause, after attending interviews at County Hall alongside other Silver Ambassadors.
Sports promotion
Stephanie's role at St Davids, where she works closely with Ms Rachel Thomas from the PE Department and Amanda John, the school's 5x60 officer, is to encourage younger students to be aware of opportunities to get involved in a wide range of sports in lunch times and after school clubs. She helps runs clubs in hockey and netball, but also helps promote leisure activities like surfing and coasteering. To do this she gives talks in assemblies and chats to students in the playground about what is on offer.
Busy day at Torch parade
She was also very busy on the day that the Olympic Torch was being carried through the county, encouraging young children to take part in athletics at STP School track, generally giving encouragement and timing the nippers in sprinting.
“It was a great day,†said Stephanie, “and it was wonderful to see so many young children wanting to take part.
“As part of the Olympic Legacy we hope that more and more people will want to find activities to take part in – and we will do anything we can to help.â€
Taking further steps
Stephanie has already attended a conference at Blue Stone where she spoke to the Bronze Ambassadors about what they can do to help in junior schools, spoke brilliantly about her role in last year's Sport Pembrokeshire Awards, and is a member of the Steering Group for Sport in Wales, representing Young Ambassadors in this Sport Wales initiative where the meetings are held in Cardiff. All this has been achieved with the full support of parents Ann and John Harris, alongside Rachel Thomas and Amanda John.
Loves netball
She certainly practises what she preaches because Stephanie plays netball and rugby to a high standard, takes part in hockey and other leisure activities, and has represented her school in the sprint, long jump and discuss at the Dyfed Sports.
One of her main sporting interests is in netball, where she plays wing defence for school, Pembrokeshire and the Welsh Development Squad, which trains in Carmarthen. Stephanie also plays for Milford Ladies and really enjoys being so involved in this free-flowing sport.
Rugby talent earns Welsh selection
She started her interest in rugby when Mr Neil Davies started up a girls' rugby team in Year Nine, first playing tag matches and then moving on to full contact with such success that St David's School won the Welsh Schools' Championships at under 16 and under 18 level. Stephanie also plays for Haverfordwest under 18s and when she reaches 18 in a few months' time plans to join Whitland Ladies as a centre in their fast-developing squad. Not content with that little lot, Stephanie also plays in the three-quarter line for the Scarlets under 18 side and attended trials in Cardiff for the Welsh Sevens' team before pulling on the coveted Welsh jersey against the other Home Countries in a competition in London where they stayed in the Olympic Village.
Good luck
Despite being so involved in her own participation, Stephanie is eager to keep encouraging others of any age to take part. PembrokeshireSport.co.uk was delighted to chat to Stephanie Harris about her belief that there is a sport or leisure activity for most people and we wish her every success in the future because she really is a great Gold Ambassador, and a credit to herself, family and her school!
