There are a number of talented young footballers beginning to make a name for themselves in the county and one of those is undoubtedly Scott Ferney, who has already proved himself a top goal scorer with Tenby, West Dragons and Pembrokeshire.
Not only that, Scott has also attracted the attention of Cardiff City and Swansea City and actually played regularly in Cardiff for almost five years but decided that the three times a week travel was too much with school commitments. But he is still fully focussed on a career as a professional when he is older.
Like a lot of aspiring footballers, Scott began kicking a football around in his garden with dad Kevin when he was about five years old and a year later he was playing for the Tenby under 8 team, which was nurtured by Dean Hurlow, and later looked after by Kevin
Cardiff City bound
He must have done well because he was recommended to Cardiff City and was part of their junior set-up until he was 13 and played for them all over South Wales and even further afield. He was joined by other Tenby players in Dylan Rees (who has a scholarship to play now), Spencer Williams, Declan Elliott, Adam John, Dan Evans, Lloyd Hughes and Kevin Jones (who has played for Wales at under 16 level.
Tom Dyson was also a member of Swansea City’s junior side so it was easy to see what a strong team Tenby had.
Tom Yeoman Cup lost on corners!
A number of them were also in the county squad for the Pembrokeshire under 12s team coached by Angie Nicholls that played in the Tom Yeoman Cup and lost in the final stages two years on the trot. On both occasions they went out to Wrexham after finishing level on points with the North Walians but missing out because they had fewer corners during the matches played there!
When Cardiff City finished with that particular age group Scott moved to Swansea City and had a few games against the likes of Aberystwyth and Newport but readily admits that he didn’t enjoy himself so much at their training ground at BP Llandarcy so decided to return to Pembrokeshire to play.
Family support – and goals galore
His mum Mel has also been supportive in all that he has done, as have Chris and Holly, his brother and sister. Dad Kevin hails from Walsall and supports West Bromwich Albion but Scott is a Chelsea fan – although he says that he will almost certainly support WBA at some stage because it is in his blood.
Scott scored 35 goals last campaign at Tenby under 15s where dad was coach and Steve Escott was his assistant, and has gone even better in the campaign just finished as he notched up 40 goals for West Dragons under 16s that were looked after by Jamie Palmer and Jeremy Thomas. He scored in every game during the season to help the young Dragons take the league title and reach the final against Carew, where he also found the net – but had to settle for a runners-up medal as the opposition pulled off a shock 2-1 win!
Seven goals in one game
Included in that goal glut, which gave him an average of two goals per game, were seven scored in one match against St Clears, plus three hat-tricks against the likes of Kilgetty and Pennar Robins.
Not content with that little lot, Scott also played for Carmarthen Town’s under 16s, where he actually started out at right back under coach Sean Cresser before being moved to his rightful place up front. He was also asked to train with the club’s under 19 squad and learned from that new experience as well.
Decisions to be made
So now that his junior footballing days are over he must decide where his senior career should start and has had offers from several clubs but won’t rush into a decision. What is a certainty is that Scott is focussed on gaining experience and building on his footballing career – and we are confident that if he keeps working at his undoubted skills and he has that little bit of luck so necessary in reaching the top then we could hear a great deal more about Scott Ferney in the future!
