Bridge trio box clever at Welsh Finals

Three talented teenagers from Merlins Bridge ABC acquitted themselves superbly at the Welsh Amateur Boxing Finals held in Clydach, Swansea.

Mickey McDonagh (15) was crowned Welsh 50kg champion whilst Dylan Davies, (14) and Sion Lewis, both lost on points.

McDonagh, who lives in Monkton, is a fine prospect, and he comfortably out-pointed Aaron Roberts, of Bangor to claim victory and a coveted Welsh vest. He will now represent Wales in a match against England that will be staged in Sheffield on Saturday, March 8 and will then represent his county at the British Championships in May.

Coach Brockway well pleased by their efforts

Davies fought at 54kg and narrowly lost on points against Dylan Williams, of Gilfach Goch whilst Lewis, lost out on points in the 57kg category against Aaron Walker. Both boxers acquitted themselves really well and will be champions if they can maintain their current rate of progress.

Merlins Bridge ABC trainer Graham Brockway said: “Congratulations to Mickey because he boxed brilliantly and if he continues to train hard he’s got a bright future. Dylan and Sion both boxed solidly and they can only get stronger and more determined to win the title next year.”
